Jeffrey Alexander Sutherland began his martial arts training in 1977 studying Judo. In 1982 he began his study of Sam Tu-Dang, a martial art based on the principles of harmony, balance and neutralising. He received his first black belt in 1989 and went on to become Word Champion of the Sam Tu-Dang Golden International Championships in 1992.
Jef ran a very successful children’s class in Battersea for over 7 years which he passed on to his most senior student. During this time Jef began his training in Chinese martial arts with Wushu Master Dr Wen Linjun. In 1996 he took 1st place in Shaolinquan (Kung-Fu) and 2nd place in Taijiquan (Tai Chi) at the UK Chinese Qigong (Chi Kung) and Wushu (Martial Arts) Association Tournament. In 1997 he was awarded silver at the Sam Tu-Dang World Championships. In 1998 he changed focus from Sam Tu-Dang to a career in teaching Taijiquan and Shaolinquan. In 2005 won bronze in Quing da (semi contact sparring) at the BCCMA National Championships.
At present Jef holds a Masters Senior 5th Degree Gold Sash / 5th Dan Black Belt. In 2001 he was awarded a Diploma after attending a 3 year teacher training course run by Dr Wen Linjun at the San Ling Wushu College in London. In line with tradition Dr Wen bestowed upon Jef his given Chinese name, Jiefu. Jie meaning wise or hero and fu meaning man. He is also certified by Dr Paul Lam to teach Tai Chi for Arthritis and is a qualified specialist in teaching exercise for the prevention of falls in older adults.
Today Jef runs his own Wushu School the Jeffrey Alexander School of Martial Arts (JASMA), based in SW London, where Taijiquan, Shaolinquan and Qigong are the major subjects. He also teaches 2 successful classes for staff at the Natural History Museum and 8 classes of ‘Tai Chi based exercise’ for older adults (aged 60 to 100), funded by the NHS in the London Borough of Wandsworth. He specialises in teaching one-to-one lessons for private clients and is frequently booked for seminars, lectures and corporate sessions.
Jef combines traditional teaching values with contemporary training methodology which are reflective of our times. He encourages all his students to be sincere in training to the best of their abilities with great emphasis placed on safety.
